Marching Band/
Drumline Lingo
The marching band and drum line world has lingo all to its own.
Here are some basic terms that you may hear:
Lingo:
-
Drum major/Assistant drum major: The official leader(s) who conduct(s) the band. Are the official representatives to get scores at Retreat.
-
Front ensemble: Also known as the “pit”. Performers are in front of the marching band and colorguard and play many different percussion instruments, such as: drum kit, marimba, xylorimba, glockenspiel, bells, base drum, keyboards, cymbals. They add to the show by being in synch and acting as much as the marchers.
-
Color guard: These performers use flags/rifles/swords and other props to produce a visual impact for the show.
-
Retreat: Every show concludes with retreat. Each school is represented by students who receive the judges’ overall scores for the performance.
